How To Choose the Perfect Honeydew Melon

If there’s one thing I love about summer, it’s the melons. They get so sweet and flavorful that it seems like I could live on nothing but melons all summer long. But it’s so disappointing when you get a melon that just doesn’t taste good – not sweet enough or not ripe enough. It just makes the whole melon-eating experience a huge let-down.

One of my favorites (besides watermelon!) is honeydew melon. That’s why I’m going to show you how to pick out just the right honeydew melon so you can get the most flavorful, enjoyable melon possible.

The 9 Essential Tests for Perfect Honeydew

1. The Squeeze Test

Gently squeeze both ends of the honeydew melon. You want them to have a little bit of give to them, similar to pressing on a ripe avocado. This slight softness means it’s perfectly ripe and ready to eat.

2. Check the Color

The color is your biggest clue! Look for a creamy, golden-yellow hue all over the rind. The more yellow it is, the better. Avoid any melons with green tones – they were picked too early and will lack sweetness.

3. Feel the Texture

Run your hands over the surface. A ripe honeydew will have an almost sticky or tacky feeling to the skin. This slightly waxy texture develops as the melon reaches peak ripeness.

4. Embrace the Brown Spots

Those brown spots on the rind are actually a good sign! Just like brown spots on a banana, these indicate where the fruit is at its sweetest. Don’t shy away from a honeydew with some natural blemishes.

5. Look for the Right Shape

Choose a honeydew that’s symmetrical and spherical in shape. Irregularly shaped melons often indicate uneven ripening, which can mean inconsistent flavor throughout.

6. The Weight Test

Pick up your melon – it should feel surprisingly heavy for its size. Since melons are mostly water, a hefty weight means it’s packed with juice and will be incredibly refreshing.

7. Give it a Sniff

Use your nose! A ripe honeydew will have a subtle, sweet, floral aroma at the blossom end (opposite from the stem). If it smells overly strong or fermented, it’s past its prime.

8. The Shake Test

Here’s a fun one: hold the melon up to your ear and give it a gentle shake. If you can hear the seeds rattling around inside, that’s a sign it’s fully ripe and ready to eat.

9. The Tap Test

Give the melon a firm tap with your knuckles. A ripe honeydew will produce a hollow, deep sound, while an unripe one will make a higher-pitched thud.

Bonus Signs of a Great Honeydew

Look out for these extra indicators:

  • The “spider web” markings: Those light brown, web-like patterns on the rind? They’re actually a good sign! This natural scarring often indicates extra sweetness.
  • Check the stem end: It should look dried and slightly sunken, not moldy or wet. A healthy stem end is a sign the melon was picked at the right time.

What About Orange Honeydew?

You might come across orange-fleshed honeydew varieties, which are a newer type that’s become popular. These follow similar rules – the more orange the flesh appears through the rind, the riper it is. However, they tend to be slightly less sweet than traditional green-fleshed honeydew. There are also other varieties like golden honeydew and even some with salmon-colored flesh!

When to Buy (And When Not To)

Honeydew season typically runs from June through October, with peak sweetness happening between July and September. Here’s something important to know: there’s a big difference between an immature honeydew and a mature but unripe one.

Choosing a Honeydew Melon at the Supermarket

If a honeydew is picked too early while completely green (immature), it will never ripen properly – it’ll stay hard and flavorless forever. However, if it’s mature but just not quite ripe yet, it absolutely CAN continue to ripen after harvest! The key is learning to tell the difference.

Look for honeydew that has at least some yellow tinge to it – this indicates it reached maturity on the vine. These melons can ripen beautifully at home in 3-5 days at room temperature. You can even speed up the process by putting it in a paper bag, which traps the natural ethylene gas the melon produces.

But avoid green honeydew – these were picked too early and will never develop that sweet, juicy flavor we love.

After August, it’s best to be extra careful when selecting honeydew. As the season ends, you’re more likely to find melons that were harvested too early to meet demand. The exception is if you live in California, where fresh honeydew is grown and harvested later in the season.

Storage Tips for Maximum Freshness

Once you bring your perfect honeydew home, store it at room temperature if you plan to eat it within a day or two. Never refrigerate whole, uncut honeydew – this can actually make it lose flavor!

After cutting, store the pieces in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days for best quality. For the most delicious experience, serve your honeydew chilled – it really brings out that refreshing sweetness.

How to Know if It’s Gone Bad

Nobody wants to bite into a bad melon! Watch out for these warning signs:

  • Soft, squishy spots that give way easily when pressed
  • Dark mold, especially around the stem end
  • An alcoholic or fermented smell
  • A mealy, mushy texture when cut (this happens when honeydew gets overripe)

Cutting and Serving Your Honeydew

To get the most out of your perfect honeydew:

  1. Wash the outside before cutting to prevent bacteria from transferring to the flesh
  2. Cut in half and scoop out the seeds
  3. Remove the rind with a sharp knife, following the curve of the melon
